Generali Run The Sun – Ascona-Locarno-Marathon

1. General information

The first edition of the Generali Run The Sun – Ascona-Locarno Marathon will take place from 5 to 7 March 2027 in the heart of the region.

The event aims to offer a unique running experience in Italian-speaking Switzerland, bringing together sport, destination, tourism and community spirit.

Three days of running, emotions and events will bring together elite athletes, recreational runners, families, children, volunteers and spectators among the lake, mountains and landscapes of Lake Maggiore.

The event is organised with the support of the competent authorities, official partners and relevant institutions.

Schedules and individual program items may be adjusted for organisational or safety reasons, or at the request of the authorities.

By registering, the participant accepts these Regulations, the General Terms and Conditions, and the Privacy Policy published on the official website.

2. Competition program

Marathon – 42.195 km

  • Sunday, 7 March 2027
  • Start: 09:00
  • Start location: Piazza Grande, Locarno
  • Finish: Piazza Grande, Locarno
  • Time limit: 6 hours from crossing the start line
  • Minimum age: 18 years (born in 2009 or earlier)

Half Marathon – 21.097 km

  • Saturday, 6 March 2027
  • Start: 10:00
  • Start location: Centro Sportivo Nazionale della Gioventù (CST), Tenero
  • Finish: Piazza Grande, Locarno
  • Time limit: 3 hours from crossing the start line
  • Minimum age: 17 years (born in 2010 or earlier)

10k Run

  • Saturday, 6 March 2027
  • Start: 13:30
  • Start location: Piazza Grande, Locarno
  • Finish: Piazza Grande, Locarno
  • Time limit: 2 hours
  • Minimum age: 15 years (born in 2012 or earlier)

Walking/Nordic Walking

  • Saturday, 6 March 2027
  • Start immediately after the 10k Run
  • Start and finish: Piazza Grande, Locarno
  • Non-competitive event
  • Poles allowed
  • Time limit: 2 hours
  • Minimum age: 14 years (born in 2013 or earlier)

5k – Grand Prix Città Vecchia Locarno

  • Saturday, 6 March 2027
  • Group B: 4:30 pm (expected finishing time over 25 minutes)
  • Group A: 5:30 pm (expected finishing time under 25 minutes)
  • Start and finish: Piazza Grande, Locarno
  • course: 2 × 2,5 km
  • Special prizes for the «Via delle Monache» segment
  • Minimum age: 13 years (born in 2014 or earlier)

Kids Run

  • Sunday, 7 March 2027
  • Starts between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm depending on the category
  • Start and finish: Piazza Grande, Locarno

Kids categories

  • U14 (2014–2015): 2 km
  • U12 (2016–2017): 1,4 km
  • U10 (2018–2019): 1,4 km
  • U8 (2020–2021): 0,7 km
  • U6 (accompanied if necessary): 0.7 km
  • U5 (accompanied if necessary): 0.3 km

3. Registration

Official registrations are managed through Datasport.

Registration is only valid once the participation fee has been paid in full.

The organiser reserves the right to close registrations early for organisational, logistical or safety reasons.

During the registration process, participants may purchase optional cancellation coverage through Datasport.

According to the conditions established by Datasport, this insurance covers, among other things:

  • Cancellations;
  • Changes to the registration;
  • Distance changes;
  • Registration transfers.

Without the corresponding insurance coverage, there is no entitlement to a refund of the registration fee.

42K – Marathon

All prices are stated in Swiss francs (CHF) and include value added tax (VAT), where applicable.

5. Bib collection

Race bib collection takes place exclusively at the Generali Run The Sun Expo at PalExpo, Via alla Peschiera 9, 6600 Locarno.

Expo opening hours

Saturday, 6 March 2027
10:00 – 20:00*

The race bib must be collected in person upon presentation of the following documents:

  • Datasport-QR-Code;
  • Identification document.

A third party may collect the race bib on behalf of the participant, provided that the following documents are presented:

  • QR-Code;
  • A copy of the participant’s identification document.

Race bib collection is not available on race day.

For the Kids races, the race bib must be collected by an adult.

The race bib must be worn clearly visible on the front of the body throughout the entire race.

6. Services included in the entry fees

The following services are included in the registration fee:

  • Official race bib;
  • Official timing;
  • Live rankings;
  • Course safety services;
  • Medical assistance;
  • Refreshment stations along the course and in the finish area;
  • Official event T-shirt;
  • Finisher medal for all participants who successfully complete the race;
  • Any sponsor gifts and special offers;
  • Access to the Generali Run The Sun Expo.

Auf ein zentrales Finisher-Catering wird bewusst verzichtet, um die Gastronomiebetriebe und Angebote der Region aufzuwerten.

7. Courses and safety

Participants are required to comply with the following:

  • Instructions from event staff;
  • Directions issued by the police;
  • Official course signage;
  • Safety regulations;
  • Road traffic regulations, where applicable.

The following are not permitted:

  • Accompanying persons on bicycles, inline skates or scooters;
  • Animals and strollers;
  • Unauthorised private pacemakers.

The organisation provides:

  • Refreshment stations approximately every 5 km;
  • First-aid stations and toilets along the course;
  • A medical and emergency response plan in cooperation with the relevant services.

In the event of withdrawing from the race, the participant must inform the event staff at the nearest checkpoint or refreshment station.

Medical staff may terminate an athlete’s participation at any time for safety or health reasons.

The courses are currently undergoing certification in accordance with Swiss Athletics guidelines.

8. Bag drop and additional services

A supervised bag drop service is available.

Detailed information regarding location, opening hours and procedures will be communicated at a later date.

Showers and changing facilities:

  • CST Tenero for the half marathon;
  • Sports halls in Locarno for the other races.

9. Travel and mobility

The organisation recommends travelling by public transport.

Available:

  • rail connections;
  • regular and additional FART lines;
  • Uber services.

Official parking facilities as well as dedicated solutions for participants, volunteers and spectators will also be provided.

Detailed information will be published at a later date.

10. Rankings and awards ceremonies

The categories are defined according to the Swiss Running criteria:

  • U20
  • 20
  • 30
  • 35
  • 40
  • 45
  • 50
  • 55
  • 60
  • 65
  • 70

These categories apply to both women and men.

Awards will be given to:

  • The first three women and the first three men in the overall ranking of each race distance;
  • The first three women and the first three men from Ticino in each race distance.

No ranking or prize ceremony will be held for the Walking / Nordic Walking event.

Personal attendance at the official award ceremony is mandatory in order to receive cash prizes.

The organisation reserves the right to carry out controls and verifications in accordance with the applicable sporting regulations.

11. Health and liability

Participation is at the participant’s own risk.

Each athlete confirms that they are in an appropriate state of health to take part in the event.

The organisation accepts no liability for accidents, injuries, damages or health problems arising from participation.

Personal insurance coverage is the sole responsibility of the participant.

Medical staff may terminate an athlete’s participation at any time for health reasons.

12. Fair play and disqualification

Any unsporting behaviour will result in disqualification.

This includes in particular:

  • Taking shortcuts or leaving the official course;
  • Failure to follow instructions;
  • Use of unauthorised equipment or vehicles;
  • Providing false personal information;
  • Unauthorised external assistance.

The decisions of the organisation are final.

13. Weather and force majeure

For safety reasons, in the event of adverse weather conditions, orders from the authorities or cases of force majeure, the organisation may:

  • Modify the course routes;
  • Change start times;
  • Shorten distances;
  • Neutralise races;
  • Interrupt events;
  • Partially or fully cancel the event.

In such cases, there is no automatic entitlement to a refund of the registration fee.

Any exceptional solutions will be assessed and determined solely by the organisation.

14. Photo, video and media recordings

Photographs, video recordings and other media content will be produced throughout the event.

By registering, the participant agrees that photographs and video recordings may be used free of charge for:

  • advertising purposes;
  • editorial purposes;
  • social media;
  • marketing;
  • event communication;
  • partners and sponsors;
  • streaming and digital content.

The recordings may be used by the organiser and the official event partners as part of their communication activities.

This authorisation is granted without any limitation in time or territory.

15. Final provisions

The organisation reserves the right to amend these Regulations at any time.

Only the Italian version of the Regulations shall be legally binding.
